The Grieg Star Management Team, lead by CEO Matt Duke, oversees day-to-day business. They meet weekly to implement strategies and plans approved by the Board, and to ensure holistic operations. The team consists of leaders from all parts of our business.
Matt has been working within digital technology for over 20 years and has worked in the shipping industry for the last 16, leading global digital and IT organisations within Odfjell, and more recently leading the commercial maritime digital platform team at Kongsberg Digital. He came to Grieg Star in 2018, bringing his background of business process innovation both as a shipping professional and as a technology supplier & innovator. Matt took over as CEO in July 2019. He is educated with Bachelor of Sciences degree (Sunderland University) focusing on Environmental science and sustainable development. Matt is board member of ScanReach, a Maritime IoT startup based in Bergen, Norway as well in Grieg Logistics.
Deputy CEOHenry is a Naval Architect by education and has broad experience from project development, technical/ship management and operations from various leading companies in the shipping industry in Norway. He came to Grieg Star in 1998 from Jo Tankers AS where he spent 7 years as Director Ship Management. Henry is a board member of the Norwegian Shipowner Associations’ Deep Sea Group.
Chief Financial Officer
Annicken has a Master of Business and Economics from the Norwegian School of Management and is a Certified Financial Analyst (AFA). Prior to joining Grieg Star in 2000, she was Assistant General Manager of Union Bank of Norway and before that Financial and Project Analyst in The Torvald Klaveness Group. Annicken is part of the board of directors in several Grieg Group companies, board member and audit comittee chair in Ocean Yield ASA as well as chair of the Norwegian Shipowners’ Assocition’s Social Security Fund and NSA’s Tax and Capital Group.
Eli K. Vassenden
Chief Officer Shared Services
Eli holds more than 35 years experience in the shipping industry, from both ship owning and supplier side. Her main experience is within ship management, acquisition and crewing as well as contingency and loss prevention. From 2004 till 2017 she was responsible for the ship management in Grieg Star. Eli is now head of Shared Services which consists of HR, Crewing, Acquisitions, Quality Assurance, CSR, Contingency and Insurance and Loss Prevention. She is a board member several Grieg Group companies, of Den norske Krigsforsikring for Skib, chair of Norwegian Shipowners’ Fund at Norges Handelshøyskole, and board member of Klevenberg Shipping Services.
Jan Øivind Svardal
Chief Operating Officer
Jan Øivind is a Naval Architect, Master of Science (NTNU) by education and has broad experience from project development and newbuildings. Since he joined Grieg Star in 2006 he has been involved in 18 newbuildings from Korea and China. In addition he has been part of the development of various upgrading projects and vessels fuel performance improvement. He came to Grieg Star in 2006 from DNV GL where he spent 9 years within various field within Classification Services. Jan Øivind is a board member of Gulen Base AS and Hordaland Maritime Miljøselskap. He is Chair Board of the Joint Industrial Research programme Smart Maritime and member of the DNV GL Nordic Safety Committee .
Chief Business Development OfficerVidar has been working as VP Finance in Grieg for 5 years before starting his new Business Development position in 2017. He has 15 years of consulting, finance and investment experience and joined Grieg in 2012 after spending several years working in the private equity sector. Vidar has a Master of Business and Economics from the Norwegian Business School and holds several board positions within the Grieg Group, in companies like Grieg Green, Grieg International (investment company), Squamish Terminals and also a partly owned real estate company Utleiebolig AS.
